The Lost Of My Daughter

The article came out of a magazine called Experience Life published on December 13,2009. Written by: Janie C. Long page number 47.

A 25 year old, married couple and there newborn daughter live in Ohio. There daughter Maisie was just 2 weeks old her mother had taken her to the doctor for her 2 week checkup. During this time she was checked out and examined. Within a few minutes, the doctor told me that she had gained weight, and that I had a healthy, beautiful little baby girl. A couple of weeks later, My family and I were visiting my sister in law and her family, when my beautiful little baby power puked, and started crying. She cried for about a half an hour, and then fell asleep. We decided to go home, and I told my husband that since she had been fussy off and on that day, I was going to call the doctor in the morning. The next morning I woke up to my husband screaming profanities to God. I woke up startled and asked him what was wrong, and he kept screaming "She's dead, Our baby is dead!", as he dropped to his knees. I was in complete denial and thought he must be insane. I hurried over to her crib that was in our room, and there she lay. My beautiful baby was gone. She was cold. I had no idea what we were supposed to do, or who we were supposed to call. We were so heartbroken and hysterical, we couldn't even think straight. My husband finally called his Mom and Dad, and said "Maisie is dead, and we don't know what to do!" Everyone we called said" What, what did you say?", and then we would have to repeat those words that we never wanted to say or even hear. Between hyperventilating and crying, we would have to repeat it again, and some of them would even say "Are you sure?" We ended up calling 911, and they sent an ambulance and the coroner(who happened to be the doctor's dad. Before they took her away, we each held her one last time, as we cried our hearts out. Some of our hearts she took with her.I am sitting here balling like a baby, just thinking of it all, but if it can help one person get through a difficult time, then it will be worth it. Over a month later, we finally got the autopsy report, and found out that she had 6 heart defects including a hole in her heart. Our grief turned into anger. How could the doctor not know she had a hole in her heart, let alone 5 other heart defects. He should have been able to hear that through the stethoscope. We ended up hiring an attorney who later on(a year or so), told us that these types of heart defects are usually but not always detected, and that they were not going to be able to take our case. They suggested that we try another attorney, but at this point, we decided that we could not keep reliving the event. Within six months, my husband and I were barely talking to each other. We never talked about Maisie, and if I would try, he would just sit there. I spent countless hours in my bedroom by myself, crying and not understanding why it didn't affect him the same way. It actually made me mad. How can he go through the motions of his life, and not think about her or talk about her. Eventually I couldn't take it anymore, and told him that I wanted to get a divorce. We were split up for over a year before we actually got divorced, and I actually thought that we would get back together. I thought that the split up would make him realize how he was hurting me by not comforting me, about our loss. At first, he would hug me every time he saw me, but eventually he started dating, and gradually got to the point where he would not even speak to me. His family pretty much became the same way towards me. I will never forget that morning, the morning that changed our lives forever, and I will never forget my little Maisie. The memories will always remain in my heart forever and ever.

The article had a connection with chapter 8 the mother had memory's of her lost daughter. When she firsts lost her it was on her mind and she couldn't get that day out of her head, the memory was so painful that it was like something that was storage in her head. If you ever lose a child, or know someone who has, be there for them, and help them find a support group. Everyone has their own way of handling the loss, so bear with them. Eventually, things will get better.

Kids lower IQ Scores Linked To Air Pollution

The article came from The Herald which was published on March 29,2010

The article is about research that was done for the first time, and how it have linked air pollution exposure before birth with lower IQ scores in childhood. The article was done on a group of females who wore backpacks air monitors for 48 hours during the last few months of there pregnancy. The group of females lived in mostly low income neighborhoods in northern Manhattan and the South Bronx. The females had varying levels of exposures to typical kinds of urban air pollution mostly from cars, buses and truck exhaust. The results are in a study of 249 children who lived in New York. The children were given IQ test before starting school they were around age 5 when the test was given. The kids which had been exposed to the most air pollution before birth scored on average four or five points lower than children with less air exposure. That's a big enough difference that it could affect children performance in school. Future research is needed to confirm the new results about the exposure to air pollution. This could have the same harmful effects on the developing brain as the exposure to lead.

Reading this article made me think about the way the earth is polluted. Just thinking about how the air is polluted each and every minute by all kinds of different substances. I think that its amazing that we have different research that are done to try and pin point different IQ scores on kids. Chapter 7 Thought, Language, and Intelligence there is a section that talks about IQ test. IQ tests are also measured by Inherited ability.

Eating Disorder

Radio Station: 101.9 FM (Micheal Baisden) aired on March 9,2010

Despite our high rates of obesity, the United States is a nation obsessed with being thin. Eating disorders is a very common disease that takes a big tole over many young females life. Anorexia & bulimia both involves intense fear of being fat, but the person may be thin, normal in weight, or even overweight. Many actresses and models can wear a size 2 or 0. Some people are just naturally thin. However, I don't believe that most of Hollywood has lightening speed metabolism. Although, we love Mo'nique,Gabourey Sidibe, Queen Latifah, and Jennifer Hudson, they are the exception not the rule. The majority of Hollywood actresses don't look like them. I think magazines, television, and tabloids make bold and subtle statements about food. The tabloids are very bold with their opinions of overweight celebrities. For example, the tabloids constantly make fun of Kristie Alley, John Travolta, and Oprah Winfrey. I was in a grocery store today, and I noticed a tabloid with Lisa Marie Presley on the cover. The headline stated that she weighed 165lbs and she's only 5'3. She has gained a lot of weight, but is that really front page news? All of this proves that we are a nation obsessed with appearance. Some "regular women" aspire to be what they see in magazines, or on television. However, they fail to realize that these women don't really look like the images they present. The women on magazine covers look flawless, because of air brushing. They are pretty to start with, but with professional make-up artists, airbrushing, top personal trainers, expensive hair extensions, and sometimes surgery, they become stunning and flawless. We have cooking shows that show happy people cooking and eating. Some might argue that these shows promote eating as a way to fulfill a psychological need. We have magazines that emphasize healthy living and promote food as a biological necessity.

In my opinion, the messages that we receive about food from the media, explicit or implicit, are relative. For example, a woman who already has serious self-esteem issues about her appearance, maybe more sensitive to images in a fashion magazine. I don't think we should promote obesity. However, eating disorder is not the way to go if you want to be thin. I think the idea that beauty is different sizes, races, complexions, hair textures, hair colors, hair lengths, and ages should be promoted. In reading chapter 8 about Motivation and Emotion there was a section dealing with eating disorders. This section had a connection with the topic Eating Disorder that was talked about on The Micheal Baisden Show.

During the afternoons, Stella has a hot adulterous affair with Edgar until the day he escapes and their affair is discovered. Stella also had a lot of psychological disorders and they later found out she was bipolar. Stella has to make a decision between her family and her wild passion for Edgar.

Chapter 12 talked about the psychological disorders which this movie "Asylum" had a good connection towards this chapter, because of the bipolar disorder that Stella suffered from. This disorder make a person alternate between the two emotional extremes of depression and mania. Which Stella was like a emotional roller coaster through out this movie "Asylum".

This television show made a connection to chapter 8 & 9, so that's why I used this as part of my media project.
